In the other 49 states, the cost to install LVP generally ranges between $4 to $15 per square foot. However, in Hawaii, this number can be significantly higher.

Why? Hawaii is an island. Labor here is more expensive because the cost of living is higher. Most importantly, all materials are shipped here — either from the mainland or from Asia. Nothing is manufactured locally. On top of that, commercial real estate rent is much higher than on the mainland, which adds to overhead for any flooring company.

From our experience, a 1,000 square foot job can cost around $10,000 just for the labor. It can be cheaper if you work with a solo contractor or handyman — maybe $3,000 to $7,000 — but it can go up to $20,000–$25,000 with a larger general contractor, simply because their costs of doing business are higher.

This is where most homeowners get surprised. We always recommend getting at least three to five quotes before choosing a contractor — they're free.

When you compare quotes, you'll see the difference clearly. Some contractors will give you a detailed list of everything they're going to do, with 10+ line items. Others will just say "it's going to be six grand" with no breakdown.

Common hidden costs include:

• Trash removal: Hauling old flooring to the dump (businesses pay by weight at facilities like Colina)
• Furniture moving: Some contractors expect you to do this yourself
• Subfloor leveling: Unknown until old flooring is removed
• Delivery fees: Bringing materials in and out
• Moisture barrier installation

Be very careful with contractors who give you a quote over the phone without seeing the job. They'll often arrive, start working, and then mid-installation tell you it's going to cost extra because it's taking longer than expected.
