Why subfloor prep is harder in Hawaii than on the mainland

Most floors on Oahu go down over concrete slab, frequently on grade, often in buildings within a mile of salt water. That combination creates three problems the mainland rarely deals with all at once:

• Slab moisture. Concrete in a humid maritime climate can hold and release moisture for years. Adhesive failure, cupping and bubbling on a new floor almost always trace back to a slab nobody tested.
• Ambient humidity during cure. Primers, levelers and adhesives cure differently at 75–80% relative humidity than they do in a dry mainland warehouse. Products rated for that range behave predictably here; general-purpose products often do not.
• Freight and lead time. If a leveler runs short mid-pour, a mainland reorder is a two-to-three week hole in the schedule. Local stock is not a convenience on an island — it is the difference between finishing the job and losing it.

• Subfloor prep & patching — QFF-560 Quick Feather Float for skim coats and feather edges, and SLC-540 self-leveling compound for smoothing and leveling concrete and wood subfloors.
• Self-leveling with moisture control — ULC-500 LevelSeal combines a self-leveling compound with a built-in moisture barrier, so one pour handles both jobs on a damp slab.
• Primers & sealers — AQP-200 Eco-Prime, ACS-210 True-Seal, and VPU-155 urethane sealer for adhesion and subfloor moisture mitigation.

Choosing the right product for the substrate

A rough rule of thumb for Oahu jobs. Slab tested dry and reasonably flat: prime with AQP-200 Eco-Prime, then adhere. Slab flat but reading high on moisture: ULC-500 LevelSeal, or ACS-210 True-Seal under a standard leveler. Slab out of tolerance: SLC-540 to bring it into plane, feathered at the edges with QFF-560. Wood subfloor with movement or squeaks: address it with the IFK repair kit before anything else goes down — a leveler will not fix a structural problem, it will only hide it until it telegraphs through.
