What Hawaii does to floors — and what to buy because of it
Humidity
Outdoor humidity on Oahu runs high all year, and most homes sit on concrete slabs that wick ground moisture. Materials that absorb water — solid hardwood, fiberboard-core laminate, carpet in closed rooms — swell, cup or grow mold. Choose a floor that stays stable when the air changes, put a moisture barrier over the slab, and let the flooring acclimate in the room where it will be installed. Termites
Hawaii has the Formosan subterranean termite, the most destructive termite in the U.S. If a floor contains cellulose — solid wood, or the wood fiber in standard laminate — termites can eat it. Salt air
Within about a mile of the ocean, salt settles on every surface, dulls finishes and works into seams. Coastal homes do best with sealed, non-porous floors that can be damp-mopped often. More in salt air vs your floors.
Condo sound rules
Most Honolulu condo associations require a minimum sound rating for hard flooring and the underlayment under it, and some need board approval before you start. Yes. We take your order to Young Brothers in Honolulu at no charge to you, and Young Brothers ships it to the harbor on your island: Kahului on Maui, Hilo or Kawaihae on the Big Island, Nawiliwili on Kauai, Kaunakakai on Molokai or Kaumalapau on Lanai. Young Brothers bills the inter-island freight directly to you.
How much is flooring delivery on Oahu?
Oahu curbside delivery is free on orders of $2,500 or more. Below that, curbside delivery (no unloading) is a flat $199.99.
Do you install flooring outside Oahu?
No. We install on Oahu only, and our free in-home estimates are for Oahu too. For Maui, Kauai, the Big Island, Molokai and Lanai we supply the flooring and ship it by Young Brothers. Call us at (808) 210-4807 and we will quote the materials for your project.
What flooring holds up best in Hawaii's humidity?
For most island homes we recommend SPC vinyl plank: it is waterproof, has no wood fiber for termites to eat, and its rigid core barely moves as humidity changes. Porcelain tile is the other safe choice. Engineered hardwood works with moisture control and termite protection; solid hardwood and standard laminate need the most care here.
Is your flooring in stock in Hawaii?
Much of what we sell is stocked in our Waipio warehouse on Oahu. Products marked In Stock Oahu on our website are ready for pickup or delivery without waiting on mainland freight.
Do Honolulu condos have rules about flooring?
