Best Flooring for Hawaii Homes: Humidity, Salt Air & Termites
Choosing flooring on the mainland is mostly about looks and budget. Choosing flooring in Hawaii is about survival: year-round humidity, salt-laden trade winds, relentless sun, and some of the hungriest termites in the country. After two decades of installing floors across Oahu, here's our honest guide to what actually holds up in island homes β and what to avoid.
The 3 Enemies of Flooring in Hawaii
1. Humidity
Honolulu's relative humidity sits between 60β80% most of the year. Materials that absorb moisture β solid hardwood, laminate with fiberboard cores, carpet in poorly ventilated rooms β swell, cup, buckle, or grow mold. Any flooring you choose needs to be dimensionally stable when the moisture in the air changes daily.
2. Salt Air
If you live in Kailua, Hawaii Kai, Ewa Beach, or anywhere within a mile of the ocean, salt aerosols settle on every surface. Salt accelerates corrosion of fasteners, dulls finishes, and works into seams. Floors near the coast need sealed, non-porous surfaces that can be damp-mopped often without degrading.
3. Termites
Hawaii is home to the Formosan subterranean termite β the most destructive termite species in the U.S. They don't just eat framing; they will happily consume solid wood flooring and the paper backing of some laminates. We covered this in depth in our guide on how to spot and stop termites in hardwood floors, but the short version: if it's cellulose, it's food.
What Works Best: Our Rankings for Island Homes
π₯ SPC Vinyl Plank Flooring β The Hawaii Winner
Stone Polymer Composite (SPC) vinyl plank flooring is 100% waterproof, contains zero cellulose (termites can't eat it), and its rigid mineral core barely moves with humidity swings. It shrugs off sand tracked in from the beach, wipes clean of salt film, and handles the barefoot indoor-outdoor lifestyle of island living.
Our Nroro Hawaii Collection was built specifically for local conditions β 6.5-mm SPC planks with wood visuals inspired by the islands, like Hawaiian King Koa, the airy Noble Light Oak, and coastal-toned Luxury Driftwood Oak. For budget-conscious projects, our Waikiki Collection offers the same waterproof SPC construction in popular colors like Fresh Gray Oak.
π₯ Porcelain & Ceramic Tile
Tile is impervious to water, salt, and termites, and stays cool underfoot β a real benefit in non-AC homes. The trade-offs: hard underfoot, grout lines need maintenance, and installation costs run significantly higher than vinyl plank. See our breakdown of flooring installation costs on Oahu for comparison.
π₯ Engineered Hardwood β With Caveats
If you want real wood, engineered hardwood like our UA Floors line is far more stable than solid wood in humidity. But it still contains wood β meaning termite treatments and vigilant moisture control are non-negotiable. Best for upper floors of homes with regular pest inspections, away from the shoreline.
β οΈ Use With Caution: Laminate & Solid Hardwood
Traditional laminate has a fiberboard core that swells with moisture and attracts termites. Waterproof laminates (like Cali Pacifica) solve the water issue but still contain wood fiber. Solid hardwood in Hawaii demands humidity control, termite contracts, and acceptance of seasonal movement β a premium look with premium upkeep.
Room-by-Room Recommendations
Kitchens, bathrooms, lanai-adjacent rooms: SPC vinyl plank or tile β waterproof is mandatory.
Bedrooms and living areas: SPC vinyl plank for easy living, or engineered hardwood if you want natural wood warmth.
Rentals and high-traffic family homes: SPC vinyl plank β scratch-resistant wear layers handle sand, pets, and tenants.
Ground floors on slab: Always pair flooring with a proper moisture barrier β Hawaii slabs wick ground moisture year-round.
Don't Skip Acclimation
Even waterproof flooring needs to adjust to your home's temperature before installation. We explain why in our guide on whether vinyl plank flooring needs to acclimate in Hawaii.
