Removing and Replacing Doors for Flooring Installation: What to Know
When new flooring goes into a room, the doors in that area often need to come off first. Removing interior, closet, and sliding doors before installing vinyl plank, laminate, or hardwood produces a cleaner, more professional result — and avoids awkward gaps or doors that no longer clear the new floor height.
Why doors come off first
New flooring usually changes the floor height slightly. If doors stay in place during installation, the installer has to work around them, which leaves visible cuts and uneven transitions. Removing them lets the flooring run cleanly through the doorway, and the door can be rehung — and trimmed if needed — once the floor is in.
Use a licensed door contractor when in doubt
For modifications or repairs, we recommend a licensed interior door contractor. Best Flooring Honolulu is not a licensed interior door contractor, so any structural door work should go to a specialist.
Door removal as part of installation
To make the process easier for customers, we offer in-house removal and reinstallation of sliding doors, closet doors, and interior doors — without modifying the doors themselves. This service is offered only as part of a flooring installation or replacement, not on its own.
Planning your project
Knowing your doors will be handled as part of the job makes scheduling simpler. See what's covered under our flooring installation service, or request a free in-home estimate for your Oahu home.
