SPC flooring problems are real, and most of them have nothing to do with the plank itself. We import and sell SPC vinyl plank flooring for a living, so this is not a hit piece. The planks are genuinely durable. But the industry markets SPC as a 100% waterproof, indestructible material, and that marketing hides five weak points in the system that lead to expensive repairs, snapped locking joints and ruined subfloors.

Here is what actually goes wrong, why it happens, and the rooms where we tell customers not to install SPC at all.

First, what SPC gets right

Credit where it is due. SPC (Stone Plastic Composite) has a limestone and PVC core that does not absorb water, barely expands or contracts with temperature, and resists denting better than almost anything else at its price. For most Hawaii homes it is the right choice, and we explain why in our SPC vs WPC guide. The problems below are about the floor as an installed system, not the material.

Problem 1: Waterproof describes the plank, not your floor

This is the single biggest misunderstanding in the category. An SPC plank can sit in a bucket of water for a week and be fine. Your floor is a different story, because a floating floor is made of hundreds of seams.

When standing water reaches those seams, it does not damage the planks. It travels through them and sits on the subfloor underneath, where nothing can dry out. On plywood that means swelling and rot. On concrete slab it means trapped moisture and, eventually, mold. Because the surface still looks perfect, most homeowners find out months later when the smell starts or the floor begins to lift.

This is closely related to hydrostatic pressure pushing moisture up through a slab, which is a common failure in older Oahu homes.

What to do about it

  • Always use a proper moisture barrier over concrete, and test the slab first.
  • Silicone the perimeter in wet areas so water cannot get under the field of the floor.
  • Treat any standing water as an emergency. Pull planks and dry the subfloor rather than mopping the surface.

Problem 2: The click-lock joint is the weakest part of the floor

SPC is rigid, which is exactly why the locking profile is brittle. The tongue that holds two planks together is a thin machined edge of that stone-plastic core, and it does not flex. Put a concentrated rolling load on it and it snaps rather than bends.

Office chairs with hard casters are the classic culprit. So are wheelchairs, walkers, appliance dollies and heavy furniture dragged instead of lifted. Once a tongue shears, the seam opens, the planks separate, and the only real fix is to take the floor apart back to that plank.

What to do about it

  • Swap hard casters for soft rubber wheels, or use a chair mat in any home office.
  • Felt pads under every furniture leg, and lift rather than drag.
  • In a commercial or high-traffic setting, consider glue-down instead of click-lock.

Problem 3: Subfloor flatness is not optional

Because SPC is rigid, it does not conform to a wavy subfloor the way a flexible glue-down plank does. It bridges the low spots instead. Every time someone steps on that unsupported span, the joint flexes, and the click system fatigues until it fails.

Most manufacturers specify flatness within roughly 3/16 of an inch over 10 feet. That is tighter than most homeowners expect, and older Hawaii homes frequently fail it. Skipping this step is the most common reason a brand-new floor develops clicking, movement or separated seams within the first year, and it voids nearly every warranty.

What to do about it

  • Check with a straightedge or laser before you buy materials, not after.
  • Grind down high spots and fill low spots with self-leveller.
  • Budget for floor prep. On an uneven slab it can be a real line item, and it is cheaper than reinstalling.

Problem 4: The wear layer scratches more easily than laminate

SPC resists dents better than laminate. It does not resist scratches better. The printed design is protected by a clear vinyl wear layer measured in mils, and vinyl is a softer material than the melamine surface on a quality laminate.

Grit is the real enemy. In Hawaii that means sand tracked in from the beach, which acts like sandpaper underfoot. A thin 6 mil wear layer will show traffic paths within a couple of years. For a family home we would not go below 20 mil.

Problem 5: The transitions break before the floor does

Stair noses, reducers and T-moldings are usually made from a thinner extrusion or a hollow profile rather than solid SPC. They take the most abuse of any part of the floor and they are the first thing to crack, especially on stair edges.

The practical issue is availability. Colour runs change and profiles get discontinued, so a broken stair nose two years after installation can be impossible to match. Buy spares up front.

Where SPC is genuinely the right call

Living rooms, bedrooms, hallways, offices and kitchens on a flat, dry subfloor. It also goes over existing tile very well because the profile is thin. A short checklist before you buy

  1. Test the subfloor for flatness and moisture.
  2. Choose a wear layer of 20 mil or more for a family home.
  3. Leave the manufacturer's expansion gap at every wall and fixed object.
  4. Order spare planks and spare transition pieces from the same batch.
  5. Put soft casters and felt pads on everything that moves.

Frequently asked questions

Is SPC flooring really waterproof?

The plank is. The installed floor is not, because water travels through the seams and sits on the subfloor where it cannot dry.

Why did my SPC floor separate at the seams?

Almost always an uneven subfloor, a missing expansion gap, or a snapped locking tongue from a rolling load.

Does SPC scratch easily?

More easily than laminate. Wear layer thickness matters more than anything else, and tracked-in sand is the main cause.

Can SPC go over tile?

Usually yes, as long as the grout lines are filled and the surface meets the flatness spec.
